Containers for Railway Transport
Overview
Containers for railway transport in Japan consist of standard containers owned and managed by Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight) and privately owned containers owned by shippers or companies. They are widely used across the national railway network, primarily aimed at promoting modal shifts and improving efficiency through combination with truck transport.
Features
JR containers have sizes, structures, and equipment based on standards set by JR Freight, facilitating easy use by many shippers.
Users do not need to own the containers; the basic model is a "rental system" where they are borrowed and used as needed.
Privately owned containers generally conform to the specifications of JR Freight's rolling stock, with 12-foot being common, but sizes of 20-foot and 31-foot are also available. Types are diverse, including dry containers for general cargo, refrigerated/freezer containers for transporting food and pharmaceuticals, and tank containers suitable for liquid transport.
The biggest advantage of privately owned containers is that shippers can customize specifications to suit their transport needs.
Options such as structural designs for special cargo, models with enhanced insulation performance, and lashing rails can also be incorporated.
Furthermore, as they must meet JR Freight's safety and inspection standards, introduction involves certain procedures. Leveraging our experience and know-how cultivated in manufacturing JR containers, we propose privately owned containers with structures that clear these standards while also meeting our customers' specific requirements.
